I am running for City Council because I really believe I can make a difference in the future of Alpharetta. Making our downtown come alive, protecting our financial future and bringing in more corporate and small business jobs to our great city are all priorities for me. Donald delivered the following 3-minute statement at the Candidate Forum at Alpharetta High School on October 26th.
Thank you for the invitation to join you this evening. This is an excellent event and it is so refreshing to see this many young people excited about the political process and getting actively involved in their community.
I have chosen to run for City Council for a very simple reason: I want to do everything in my power to help improve the quality of life for my neighbors and my community. I have a passion and a vision to make this happen and I believe we can accomplish this through three main focuses.
I believe economic development is the lifeblood of a sustainable community. I’m in favor of Alpharetta having two economic development commissioners with one being responsible for recruiting large companies to Alpharetta, and the other being an advocate for small businesses by tearing down the road blocks that inhibit small business growth in our city. I believe Alpharetta can be the premier city in Georgia for small business and when that happens the quality of life will improve for all citizens because we’ll have better, more competitive services and more local jobs.
Second, I believe the redevelopment of our historic downtown is paramount. Every premier city in the history of civilization has had a vibrant downtown area where people gather to experience the quality of life and joy that comes with community. The good news is that the “bones” are in place for Alpharetta to have a vibrant, attractive, healthy downtown district. The bad news is that we’ve made zoning restrictions so cumbersome that businesses are understandably timid about investing in this critical area of our city. By electing me to the city council, you’ll be sending the message that the responsible and determined redevelopment of downtown is the council’s top priority. This will attract and promote business growth, raise property values, lower millage rates, and improve the quality of life for everybody in Alpharetta.
Lastly, fiscal responsibility must continue to be a priority for our city. The council has done an excellent job of maintaining the city’s financial health despite the economic downturn and I’ll continue to employ the fiscal responsibility that I’ve honed over 22 years as a small business owner. The quality of life for all our citizens is dependent upon the wise and intelligent use of taxpayer funds and I have a proven record of fiscal responsibility.
Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity. I’d be honored to help each of you maintain and improve the quality of life which has attracted all of us to this wonderful city.
Here Donald is shown receiving the 1st shipment of containers for Alpharetta. The flowering container program is a project very special to Donald. Larry Attig, Dick Debban, Donald and others have been working to improve the curb appeal of Downtown. With in two weeks the public should be able to see the fall flowers along Canton and Roswell streets and Milton Ave. Later they will also be placed along Main Street. Thanks to the Downtown Alpharetta Trade Association, our Mayor and City Council voted unanimously to increase the curb appeal of Alpharetta we will all enjoy these for years to come. These planters will be replanted 3 times a year and maintained throughout the year. Creating curb appeal is just one of many ways to bring more business to Alpharetta.
A true testament of supporting a candidate running for the Alpharetta City Council is volunteer participation. Last night Donald Mitchell hosted a large group of volunteers at the 52 Bistro Restaurant who have “signed up” to help him win. These individuals will be walking subdivisions to get the word out about why Donald is running for city council, what he stands for, and why they should vote for him. They’ll also be putting up signs and making calls to friends and neighbors to get the word out.

The Downtown Alpharetta Trade Association is hosting a public forum for the candidates running for city office in the upcoming elections on Tuesday, November 8, 2011.
The forum will start at 6:00 pm with a light appetizer, cash bar meet greet where people will have an opportunity to speak with the candidates.
Hatcher Hurd will begin moderating the event which will start between 6:30pm and 6:45pm with the introduction of Mayoral candidates. City Council candidates are up next.
Each candidate will have 2 minutes for opening statements. The candidates will be presented with 5 or 6 questions each and will have 1 minute to reply and close with a 1 minute summation.
All candidates will then field questions from the audience that were submitted on a card prior to the event and chosen, for the remainder of the time..
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear what your candidates have to say as they are presented with important questions on the issues that are facing Alpharetta.
